A deep dive to help you understand your personal dental journey.

In recent years, vaping has emerged as a widely popular alternative to smoking, with many individuals believing it to be a safer option. However, as a dentist with years of experience at Padstow Dental, I feel compelled to shed light on the potential dental health risks associated with vaping.
It’s a common scenario in my office: patients proudly declare they’ve quit smoking, only to admit they’ve turned to vaping instead. While it’s true that vaping eliminates the combustion process present in traditional cigarettes, thus reducing exposure to some harmful chemicals, it’s crucial to understand that vaping still poses significant risks to oral health.
Some of the primary concerns with vaping are:
Gum Health: One of the key issues with vaping is its impact on gum health. Studies have shown that the chemicals present in vaping liquids can lead to inflammation of the gums, commonly known as gingivitis. This inflammation can progress to more severe periodontal disease if left untreated, potentially resulting in tooth loss.
Oral Tissues Irritation: Furthermore, the act of vaping itself can have detrimental effects on oral tissues. The heat and chemicals from the vapor can irritate the mouth and throat, leading to dry mouth, which increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Additionally, the repetitive motion of inhaling and exhaling vapor can cause irritation to the soft tissues of the mouth, including the palate and the inside of the cheeks.
Oral Cancer Risk: Another concerning aspect of vaping is its potential to contribute to oral cancer. While research on this topic is still ongoing, some studies have suggested a link between vaping and an increased risk of developing oral cancer. The presence of certain chemicals in vaping liquids, such as formaldehyde and acrolein, has been associated with cellular damage and the development of cancerous lesions in the mouth.
As your dentist, my goal is to educate and empower my patients to make informed decisions about their health. While quitting smoking is undoubtedly a positive step, replacing it with vaping may not be the solution many believe it to be. E-cigarettes should not be considered safer than smoking conventional cigarettes. It’s essential to recognise that vaping carries its own set of risks, particularly when it comes to oral health.
If you’re considering quitting or vaping, I encourage you to speak with your healthcare provider for personalised guidance and support. Additionally, don’t hesitate to schedule a dental check-up to assess the current state of your oral health and discuss any concerns you may have.
