GBT dental cleaning in Padstow

A guided approach to caring for your teeth and gums

GBT dental cleaning in Padstow

A professional clean is about more than the smooth feeling on your teeth afterwards. It is an opportunity to assess your gums, remove deposits that are difficult to manage at home and help you care for the areas that need extra attention.

At Padstow Dental, we use Guided Biofilm Therapy, or GBT, as part of our preventive care. It combines a structured cleaning approach with practical advice tailored to your mouth.

What is biofilm

Dental biofilm is the organised layer of microorganisms that builds up on teeth. You will probably know it as dental plaque. It can collect around the gumline, between teeth and in other places that are difficult to reach.

When plaque accumulates, it can contribute to gum inflammation. Redness, swelling and bleeding may be signs of gingivitis. More advanced gum disease, called periodontitis, affects the tissues and bone supporting the teeth and requires a specific treatment plan.

Plaque also plays a role in tooth decay. Daily cleaning and professional care work together to manage it; a single appointment cannot stop biofilm forming again.

Understanding gum disease

What makes the clean guided

A key part of GBT is making plaque visible with a disclosing solution that temporarily colours it. This helps us identify where biofilm remains and show you areas that may be missed during everyday cleaning.

Seeing these areas can make home care much easier to understand. You might discover that one surface needs a different brushing angle or that an interdental brush would help in a particular space. The purpose is to give you useful guidance, without judgement.

How the cleaning works

Air polishing uses a controlled combination of air, water and fine powder to remove biofilm and surface stains. Any remaining tartar, also called calculus, is removed with appropriate scaling instruments. Air polishing does not replace the need to remove hardened deposits.

The equipment and technique are selected for your clinical needs. We check the result and explain any further care required.

Your comfort matters

If previous cleans have been uncomfortable, or you are nervous about treatment, tell us before we begin. We can explain each stage, check how you are feeling and discuss suitable comfort measures.

No cleaning method is comfortable for everyone. Inflamed gums, exposed roots and sensitive teeth can make some areas tender. Your medical history and any allergies also help us choose an appropriate approach.

Will GBT make my teeth whiter

Removing surface stains can leave your teeth looking cleaner and brighter. However, GBT does not bleach teeth or change their underlying natural colour.

If you are interested in a lighter tooth shade, we can discuss professional whitening separately. A clean and whitening serve different purposes, and you may not need both.

What if I already have gum disease

GBT can form part of professional biofilm management, but your diagnosis determines the care you need. Periodontitis may require more extensive cleaning below the gums, sometimes over several appointments with local anaesthetic, followed by reassessment and ongoing maintenance.

Persistent bleeding, gum recession or loose teeth should be assessed. Gum disease can progress without significant pain, so the absence of discomfort does not necessarily mean your gums are healthy.

How gum disease treatment is planned

How often should I have a clean

We recommend a review interval based on your gum health, plaque control and individual risk factors. Some people need closer maintenance than others, particularly after treatment for periodontitis.

Between appointments, brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth using the method recommended for you. We can demonstrate the technique and help you select suitable aids.
