A deep dive to help you understand your personal dental journey.
Dr Bill Kalis — Wednesday 16 September 2026
If you have noticed your teeth looking darker or more yellow, you may be wondering whether professional whitening could help. At Padstow Dental, we offer Philips Zoom whitening and start with a conversation about your teeth, your expectations and the result you would like to achieve.
My approach is to begin with the health of your smile. Once we understand what is causing the discolouration, we can explain whether whitening is a suitable option and what improvement is realistic for you.
Professional whitening uses a peroxide-based gel to break down coloured compounds within natural teeth. In-chair Philips Zoom treatment combines a whitening gel with a dedicated LED light as part of the treatment system. It is carried out under professional supervision, with protection for your gums and other soft tissues.
This is different from a professional clean. Cleaning removes plaque, hardened deposits and surface staining; whitening changes the colour of natural teeth. If surface stains are your main concern, a clean may provide the improvement you are looking for.
Before recommending treatment, we assess your teeth and gums, discuss any sensitivity and check existing dental work. Decay, cracks or inflamed gums may need attention first. A single tooth that has become darker also needs assessment, because its cause may require a different approach.
Whitening does not lighten crowns, veneers, implant crowns or tooth-coloured fillings. If these are visible when you smile, we will discuss how whitening could affect the colour match. Some types of discolouration respond less predictably than others.
Elective whitening is generally postponed during pregnancy and breastfeeding because safety evidence is limited.

After confirming your treatment plan, we record your starting shade, protect the surrounding tissues and apply the whitening gel. Treatment proceeds in timed applications, with your comfort monitored throughout. We then review the change and explain your aftercare.
Allow time for preparation and aftercare as well as the whitening itself. Our team will confirm the appointment length and fee when we plan your treatment.
The result depends on your starting shade, the cause of the discolouration and how your teeth respond. Some people achieve a noticeable change with in-chair treatment, while others may benefit from a different approach or a professionally supervised take-home programme.
We cannot promise an exact shade or the same result for every patient. The aim is an improvement that suits your smile and your preferences.
Sensitivity is a recognised side effect of whitening. You may notice brief sharp sensations or increased sensitivity to cold during or after treatment. It is often temporary, but it can sometimes be significant. Gum irritation can also occur.
Tell us if you already have sensitive teeth. We can discuss ways to manage this, adjust the plan where appropriate or consider another option. Contact us if discomfort is severe or does not settle.
Whitening is not permanent. The result can fade as new staining develops, and habits such as smoking or regularly drinking tea, coffee and red wine influence how long it lasts. Follow your personalised aftercare instructions and seek advice before using additional whitening products.
We may discuss supervised maintenance whitening if it is appropriate. More frequent whitening is not automatically better.
